Sabine Gross is a recent graduate of Boston University's School of Music, where she earned a Master of Music degree in Violin Performance. She previously attended Oberlin College and Conservatory of Music, where she completed a Bachelor of Music degree in Violin Performance and a Bachelor of Arts degree in East Asian Studies. As a solo performer, Sabine prides herself on thoughtful interpretations and compelling performances. She is also a lover of collaborative work and has performed extensively as a chamber musician in duos, string quartets, and piano trios, quartets, and quintets. A passionate orchestral violinist, Sabine has served in Concertmaster, Asst. Concertmaster, Principal Second, and Asst. Principal Second positions for the Boston University Symphony Orchestra, Boston University Chamber Orchestra, and the Oberlin Orchestra. She has recently performed in masterclasses for Joseph Lin, Rachel Barton Pine, Midori, Melissa White, Régis Pasquier, and the Emerson String Quartet, among others. She was also a winner of the 2019 Domaine Forget Excellence Scholarship.Sabine’s wide-ranging musical background helps her be a thoughtful and effective teacher. During the 2021-2022 school year, she was an undergraduate Aural Skills instructor at the Boston University School of Music, and she continues to foster her love of teaching through music theory and aural skills tutoring work and private violin lessons, both online and in the Boston area. Having also studied the piano, Sabine is able to hear from multiple perspectives. This, along with her experience with baroque violin and music theory studies, allows her to provide insights on rehearsal techniques, performance practice, and interpretative skills that help her students succeed, both in solo and ensemble contexts. She caters each lesson towards every student’s individual needs and helps her students create both short and long-term goals. An advocate of interdisciplinary study, Sabine is also happy to help her students with creative projects that integrate music with their other interests. In addition to being a versatile performer and attentive teacher, Sabine is a strong leader with diverse interests, including arts administration, community building, and research. In 2019, she worked as a Program Assistant for the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, helping to organize the inaugural Orpheus@Mannes program, in which she also participated as a performer. During her time at Oberlin, she dove into many leadership roles in the Oberlin Student Cooperative Association, working on projects related to institutional memory, operational efficiency, and member training. Additionally, in the spring of 2019, she assisted Professor Jan Miyake with her research of thematic saturation in last movements of Haydn symphonies through analytical work and discussions. In order to more deeply understand the roles of music in a society, Sabine spent a semester researching the influences of Western classical music in post-Cultural Revolution China, which culminated in a paper exploring the relationships between classical music, soft power, and diplomacy.Sabine is currently pursuing a Performance Diploma at the Boston University School of Music under the tutelage of Bayla Keyes. Her past principal violin teachers include David Bowlin, Dennis O’Boyle, and Pablo Ardiles. She is also extremely grateful for the influence and guidance of Lucia Lin, Isabel Trautwein, Jan Miyake, Louise Zeitlin, Francesca dePasquale, Kirsten Docter, and Luz Manriquez. She has advanced proficiency in Mandarin Chinese, and in her spare time, she enjoys spending time outdoors and hanging out with her cat.
